Speakeasies are having a moment, with semi-hidden entrances, dark, moody lighting and next-level craft cocktails combining for a unique night out. Now Fever, the event platform behind pop-up experiences like Candlelight Concerts and Dining in the Dark, is bringing a Halloween-themed speakeasy to Ridgewood, Newark and Atlantic City.

The Edgar Allan Poe Speakeasy: Chapter Two (this is the second year Fever has brought this Speakeasy to spots all over the country) invites guests to sip their way through four eerie Poe tales, each paired with a cocktail to match the vibe.

@edgarallanpoespeakeasy

The 90-minute experience brings four new tales from Poe’s dark imagination to life by historians. Organizers say there’s no need to have seen the original Edgar Allan Poe Speakeasy to enjoy Chapter Two. Version two of this immersive cocktail experience is meant to transport visitors into the tales of The Cask of Amontillado, Annabel Lee, The Pit and the Pendulum, and The Fall of the House of Usher.

@edgarallanpoespeakeasy

Each story will be thoughtfully paired with four expertly crafted spooky cocktails:

The Pale Blue Eye which is made with blueberry vodka, lemon juice, rose syrup and La Croix.

Cocktail of Red Death which is made with 100-proof vodka, cherry herring, benedictine liquor, lime juice, pineapple juice, and bitters.

Edgar’s Twisted Brandy Milk Punch which is made with equal parts Kentucky Bourbon and French Brandy. Mixed with vanilla cream, milk syrup, and half-and-half, it’s topped with star anise.

The Nevermore which is made with orange peach blossom vodka, lime juice, and secret spices.

@edgarallanpoespeakeasy

Fever bills it as “a night of gothic elegance and macabre delight” for those “brave enough to attend” so grab your girls for this 3-day pop-up.

Tickets are $55 per person (21+ only) and are on sale for 90-minute time slots (many are already sold out) over 3 days in these spots:

This Thursday through Saturday (Oct. 23 – 25) at The Woman’s Club in Ridgewood
Nov. 6-8 at Newark Symphony Hall in Newark
Nov. 13-15 at the Anchor Rock Club in Atlantic City

STEVE FREIHON

Planning a couple’s getaway is not always easy – figuring out childcare, booking flights and researching a destination for restaurants and activities can all make it something that drops to the bottom of the to-do list. But when a fabulous new hotel recently opened in my town, I knew this was a great way for my husband and me to spend time together without all of the hassle that goes along with planning a longer trip.

STEVE FREIHON

The Graduate by Hilton Princeton opened last summer. The Graduate hotels are part of a collection of hotels based in university towns, and it was very exciting when this one came to Princeton. Until recently, I’d only had a drink there with friends (which was great!). Of course, it makes sense that I wouldn’t have stayed over in a hotel that’s just a five-minute drive from home. But then I got to thinking that this was actually a brilliant plan. My husband and I could easily get away for 24 hours and since we didn’t have to go far, we’d be able to maximize the fun.

RONNIE KOENIG

We started our evening at Ye Tavern Restaurant, the bustling eatery on the ground floor of the hotel. The menu features elevated pub favorites and unique pre-Prohibition Era cocktails. I tried the Cantina Cooler, a tropical cocktail made with rum, coconut-kiwi, pineapple, falernum, lime and green chartreuse. While my husband opted for a Diet Coke, I was impressed that they also had a full list of mocktails. For appetizers, we shared an impressive charcuterie board. My husband had the soup, a corn bisque that was very savory and delicious. Then for entrees I had the Ale Braised Chicken, and he had the Fish and Chips. All around, it was a top-notch meal.

ANDREW FRASZ

Fully satiated, we decided to take a walk around Princeton. It was funny that the streets we walk along each day took on a different vibe. We were on vacation! We returned to our room which was decorated in a collegiate manner, a nod to Princeton University. The best thing about the Graduate is all of the attention to detail – even our room keys were “student IDs.” We stayed in the King Princeton One Bedroom Suite and the living room felt like an opulent study complete with a wet bar. The bedroom had a king-sized bed and looked out onto Nassau Street and the campus. I particularly loved the wallpaper in the bathrooms. Every detail throughout the hotel was well thought out, but best of all, everyone we encountered from the front desk to the restaurant was friendly and welcoming. I also noticed lots of four-legged friends coming and going so this hotel is pet-friendly if you want to bring your pooch.

Though we went home after our amazing overnight, there’s so much to do in Princeton if you decide to visit. My top recommendations are:

Flower Picking at Terhune Orchards – Many people know about the fantastic seasonal fruit-picking here, but few know that you can also pick your own flowers. Visit the farm store to get scissors and a container and then stroll through a gorgeous field of flowers to create your own bouquet!

Princeton Canoe and Kayak Rental – Spend the afternoon paddling on the D&R Canal and/or nearby Lake Carnegie. This is such a scenic and serene way to spend some time, and the dock is located right near the Princeton train station.

Morven Museum & Garden – This National Historic Landmark is situated on five acres in the heart of Princeton. There’s a full schedule of events here from a twilight garden stroll to afternoon tea.

The Bent Spoon – No trip to Princeton is complete without a visit to this artisan ice cream shop featuring unique flavors such as lemon lilac, NJ organic strawberry and dark chocolate sorbet. And yes, if there’s a line, it’s worth the wait!

Graduate by Hilton Princeton is located at 10 Chambers Street, Princeton. Ye Tavern Restaurant is open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner daily until 9 pm, and until 10 pm on Fridays and Saturdays.

Scour the raw bar, bring your appetite for Berkshire pork schnitzel, charred cauliflower steak or spring lamb shoulder.

Maritime Parc

84 Audrey Zapp Dr., Jersey City
201-413-0050

Think old-school fish house gone mod. Watch your plate be prepped in the open kitchen, sip at the outdoor bar on the split-level patio or make a date for brunch. If you splurge on dinner, try brined king salmon with leek and potato hash and spiced baby carrots, ginger glazed sea bass with shitake mushrooms in a coconut broth, or a duo of a NY strip steak plus braised short rib created by Chef Chris Siversen.

Molos

This stunning giant consists of multi-level indoor and outdoor spots to hang, The Rooftop and The Terrace. While the food is top notch (think roasted wild mushroom toast, baked crab fondue or fried Amish chicken wings), the star of this spot is the cocktail list. Sip Jersey-inspired libations like the Green Tea Long Island (vodka, gin, white rum, Nonino Amaro, green tea lemonade, lemon simple syrup) or Where’s Waldo (Knob Creek rye, absinthe, cognac, Demarara, Peychauds, walnut bitters).

Rumba Cubana

Guttenberg, North Bergen, Clifton, Jersey City, Rochelle Park

Paradise isn’t as far away as you think. Come for show-stopping tropical drinks (mojitos and pina coladas, people!), authentic and reimagined Cuban food and lively music. Guttenberg’s location serves up the Instaworthy views of the city. Go for Cuban standards like Ropa Vieja (shredded beef simmered in a tomato-base sauce), carne con papas (beef and potato stew) and croquetas de jamon (ham croquettes). For dessert, savor flan de coco or head downstairs to the attached Cuban bakery.

Son Cubano

40-4 Riverwalk Pl., West New York
201-399-2020

Get a taste of 1950s Cuba from acclaimed NJ Chef David Burke: the glamour, elegance, music and, of course, the food. Sit in one of the two luxurious dining areas before making a trip to the bar for cocktails like Chili Chili Bang Bang (Don Julio Blanco tequila, ancho reyes chile, passionfruit and ginger beer). Take a seat on the patio or walk down to the water’s edge for stunning views of Manhattan after getting your fill of dishes pernil pork shank or filet mignon medallions. If you are coming with a group, consider sharing paella or a parrillada mixta (steak, filet mignon and shrimp with asparagus, chorizo and manchego fries). Before heading there, take note of the dress code requirements.

Surf City

1 Marin Blvd., Jersey City
201-516-9000

Get all the cozy magic of a Jersey shore bar without the traffic. Peep the Statue of Liberty as you explore all five on-the-water bars (including one completely devoted to frozen tropical drinks!) Keep it simple with classic bar food featuring chicken wings, burgers and, most importantly, sea fare like mussels, steamed clams and beer-battered cod with fries.

Waterside Restaurant and Catering

7800 B River Rd., North Bergen
201-861-7767

Start off with a bang, whether it be the raw bar or cheese. Follow up with ricotta stuffed zucchini blossoms, crispy braised beef brisket with creamy polenta or baked lobster mashed potatoes. For your main, go for the seafood capellini, homemade spaghetti with littleneck clams, bone-in veal chop parmesan or gnocchi in a tomato pesto pork ragu. Oh, and you’ll want to leave room for dessert. Three words: Banana bread pudding.

The concept of a Mexican steakhouse is pretty unique—but when it comes from the team behind the acclaimed and super buzzy 618 Restaurant in Freehold, you can expect it to deliver the same standout experience.

From the highway, the unassuming exterior of the former Breakfast Club on Route 516 doesn’t give much away. But once you pull into the parking lot, a gorgeous mural catches your eye—offering a bold hint of what’s to come. You’ve arrived at Mezcal: A Modern Mexican Steakhouse.

Check out the hype via our Instagram page.

Step through the front doors and you’re welcomed by a stunning lobby. Opening a second set of doors, it feels like you’ve been transported to Mexico. It rivals the Mexican pavilion at EPCOT in Walt Disney World.

Once inside the dining room, you won’t know where to look first: the stunning bar to the left, which looks like it’s on fire, and is surrounded by skull stools; the dining room to the right, with incredible sugar skull murals printed on chains hanging from the ceiling; a poignant display of candles in the corner that benefits Make-A-Wish Foundation; a portrait over the Owners’ Table that has a decorative painting of the owners; or even the bathroom, which is thoughtfully decorated with more nods to Mexican culture.

The menu by Executive Chef Christopher Dutka of 618 fame is impressive. During a recent visit, we couldn’t decide what to try, so we shared the guacamole with three salsas, opting next time to add the jumbo lump crab on top; the Spanish octopus, which was grilled perfectly; the stuffed poblano pepper, with its spicy chicken diablo filling; and the braised citrus pork, skirt steak and achiote fish tacos, one better than the next.

There are raw bar options, giant surf-and-turf seafood towers, jumbo lump crab cakes, chicken tinga tostada, queso fundido, vegan roasted cauliflower, and a selection of salads.

Since this is an ultra-modern steakhouse, the meat on the menu shouldn’t be missed. There is a 20-ounce Kansas City steak, 8-ounce filet mignon, 20-ounce bone-in cowboy steak, 10-ounce Spinalis ribeye cap steak, 10-ounce skirt steak and A5 Japanese wagyu. If with a group, the 40-ounce tomahawk or 40-ounce porterhouse are clutch as a shareable entree. These are top-quality meats, and the price reflects it–but they’re so worth it!

Other options for entrees include halibut, Faroe Island salmon and chicken milanese. We ordered the spice-rubbed 14-ounce Berkshire pork chop with apple bacon jam, asparagus and potato puree, and it was worth leaving some room after the appetizers we shared. There’s also a vegan mole for the vegetarians in your crew, which has Maitake mushrooms, rice, pickled onions, avocado, radish and pinto beans on corn tortillas.

We couldn’t resist adding esquites, which is Mexican street corn; as well as the hand-cut fries, which were some of the best potato sticks we’ve had at a full-service restaurant.

The Dulce de Leche Stuffed Churros for 2, by far, was the best item on the menu – and that says a lot, considering every dish was exquisite. They are covered in a chocolate mole sauce and accompanied by the sweetest, creamiest vanilla gelato.

And who can resist mezcal at an eponymous restaurant? With the owners creating the new Death of Hospitality brand, their signature drink is the D.O.H. Sour, with Maker’s Mark bourbon, turmeric, chile, cinnamon, lemon and a Cabernet float.

The No Bullsh*t drink is Tanteo chipotle tequila, guava, Paradise passionfruit, Aperol and lime served in a glass bull, with the spout coming from its rear into two barrel glasses – an interesting take on serving a drink, the concept of which 618 is famous for (have you seen the drinks on their Instagram page?). IYKYK is appropriately named, with Tequila Ocho Plata, Vago Elote Mezcal, pink peppercorn, cilantro and lime. Muy Guapa is a fan fave, with Barsol Pisco, basil, ginger, cucumber, lime and egg white. Another fave is the pistachio martini, which draws people to 618, and is on the menu here, too.

Tequila lovers can order a flight of three 1-ounce pours, which come in four combinations. The owner also purchased bottles of Dos Artes Reserva Especial Extra Añejo Tequila, an exclusive brand.

You can also order some of the drinks as a mocktail, if tequila is not your thing.

Mezcal is very upscale and has all the date night vibes, but families are welcome, and you can ask for a special children’s menu. You should also look for a plaque inside the restaurant that the owners sweetly dedicated to their kids. Everything here is Instagram-worthy, from the design and the chandeliers to the food and drinks.

We all love a nice dinner but why not try something different this year in honor of Valentine’s Day? Here are some next level ways to celebrate your love:

Appreciate Art in the Great Outdoors

Bundle up and explore the nearly 300 contemporary works dotting the exquisitely landscaped 40+ acres comprising Grounds for Sculpture in Hamilton. Warm up by visiting the rotating indoor exhibits showcasing both known and emerging artists, then head to this museum/sculpture garden/arboretum’s on-site restaurant Rat’s for a delightful French repast prepared for the holiday de amore.

Take a Romantic Cruise

You’ll look beautiful among the glow of city lights as you sail down the Hudson River on a dinner bruise. Leave from Lincoln Harbor Marina in Weehawken aboard one of the Valentine’s Day Cruises offered by City Cruises; or opt for a bottomless mimosa brunch cruise on Sunday.

Have a Good Scare

According to psychological studies, feelings of fear also spark adrenaline and excitement. Take advantage of this phenomenon by visiting horror houses Brighton Asylum, a massive walkthrough dark attraction filled with terrifying live actors and special effects in Passaic and 13th Hour, a spooky escape room in Wharton—both offering special Valentine’s Day-themed events sure to scare up a night to remember.

STAFF PHOTO / Stumpy’s Hatchet House

Throw Caution to the Wind

Savor the rush of hatchet hurling at one of New Jersey’s many axe-throwing venues. If you’ve never tried it, axe throwing is easy to learn and lots of fun. Stumpy’s Hatchet House opened its first location in Eatontown in 2016 and has since expanded in NJ and across the country. Bury the Hatchet also has locations throughout NJ and beyond. Both invite visitors to picnic and BYOB for a fun night out.

Go Gaming

Recapture the sheer fun of gobbling ghosts in Pac-Man and trying not to tilt at YESTERcades, one of Jersey’s favorite retro arcades (locations in Red Bank, Somerville and Westfield). Silverball Museum in Asbury Park is perfect for kicking off the night before taking in a show at The Stone Pony. You can also hit Barcade in Newark or Jersey City for top-shelf drinks, exclusive beers, savory bar bites, more than 70 video and pinball games and best of all, it’s adults only.

You’ll get an overnight stay, Prosecco in your room along with two keepsake glasses, a box of signature chocolates and dinner – with options to add on breakfast and an upgrade to a suite. Pendry Natirar in Peapack is an elegant estate with upscale guest rooms, the popular Ninety Acres restaurant and a full-service spa. Crystal Springs Resort in Hamburg has the Grand Cascades Lodge that features the award-winning Latour restaurant, the crystal-filled Reflections Spa, and the Biosphere pool. In nearby Philly, why not spend Valentine’s weekend in the City of Brotherly Love visiting the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall and Penn’s Landing while booking a stay at Kimpton Monaco Philadelphia.

HARRY’S OCEAN BAR & GRILLE / Jingle Bar

Harry’s Ocean Bar & Grille introduced a brand-new Halloween pop-up bar last month. The elves have been hard at work transforming the Cape May institution into the Jingle Bar, its newest Christmas pop-up bar that debuted last weekend.

The décor is top-notch, with people lining up down the avenue to see all the Instagram-worth decorations. The specialty cocktails include festive drinks like Mistletoe Margarita, Blue Christmas, Snowflake Eggnog, Peppermint Tini and The Grinch. New this year are Holiday Cocktail Trees, which have four, six or eight drinks – either made of espresso, margarita or your choice off the holiday menu. There is live music every weekend.

The restaurant is holding a family-friendly Brunch with Santa on December 7 and 14. Parents are invited to the Ugly Sweater Party on December 21, or All That Glitters NYE Soiree on December 31.

It’s the season for giving back, too. Bring a donation for Toys for Toys through December 17. Harry’s sister property, Madison Resorts, will donate $1 from the sale of each Candy Cane Crush drink purchased from December 13 to 15 to Toys for Tots as well.

Jingle Bar is open Thursdays to Sundays through January 4 at Harry’s Ocean Bar & Grille, 1025 Beach Ave., Cape May. Hours are 2-9 pm Thursdays, 12-10 pm Fridays, 8 am to 11 pm Saturdays, and 8 am to 8 pm Sundays. Jingle Bar is also open from 2-8 pm Wednesday, November 27; 4 pm to 1 am on NYE; and 8 am to noon on New Year’s Day; but closed on Thanksgiving.
