The post Unlocking Potential: Cambridge School’s Promise to Students Who Learn Differently appeared first on NJ Family.

]]>
Since its inception 25 years ago, Cambridge School has remained committed to its mission of providing students with language-based learning differences a high-quality, individualized education that supports their unique learning styles and strengths. “Our school is a nurturing, close-knit community where students are not only supported academically but also encouraged to grow socially, emotionally, and personally,” explains Meghan Peters, Assistant Head of School & Dean of Academics.

“In 2001 we were established on the belief that every child, regardless of how they learn, deserves the opportunity for an excellent education,” Peters adds. For students who struggle in traditional school settings, particularly those who are struggling readers and those with language-based learning differences such as dyslexia, ADHD, or executive functioning challenges, Cambridge offers a fresh start. It’s a school where students are understood and supported so they can begin to thrive.

Learning That Fits The Student

One of the hallmarks of the Cambridge experience is its individualized and comprehensive approach to education. Each student’s academic day is carefully tailored to their needs. In small class settings, highly trained faculty provide a rigorous, evidence-based curriculum designed for students who learn differently. These educators are not only experts in their fields but also compassionate professionals who understand how to support diverse learners.

“Teachers get to know each student on a personal level,” explains Peters. “They create learning plans that align with their unique needs, strengths, and goals. This personalized approach helps students build confidence, develop critical thinking skills, and find joy in learning again.”

The school’s low student-to-teacher ratio allows for meaningful interaction between students and faculty. Teachers regularly monitor progress, adapt instruction, and provide feedback that supports growth across academic subjects. But Cambridge offers more than just academic support; it helps students rebuild a positive self-image and fosters a sense of belonging.

In addition to classroom learning, Cambridge offers a wide range of enriching experiences that bring the curriculum to life. Students participate in hands-on field trips, project-based learning, and real-world applications that deepen their understanding. Whether exploring a museum, visiting a local farm, or conducting a science experiment, these experiences help students make meaningful connections between what they learn in the classroom and the world around them.

Cambridge offers a full array of extracurricular opportunities, including athletic programs, musical productions, student clubs and community service projects. These activities not only provide students with a chance to pursue interests outside of the classroom but they also foster leadership, teamwork and form self-confident students who feel connected to their school community.

That sense of community is central to the Cambridge School experience. The school actively cultivates a warm, inclusive environment where students, teachers, and families feel supported and valued. Throughout the year, families are invited to participate in a variety of events, from ice cream socials and school-wide assemblies to holiday celebrations and parent education workshops. These events strengthen the bond between home and school and contribute to the tight-knit culture that makes Cambridge unique.

A Community That Transforms

“Our families often tell us how grateful they are, not just for the academic growth they see in their children, but for the emotional transformation as well,” Peters shares. “Parents often say that it feels like they got their child back.”

This emotional shift is significant. Many students who come to Cambridge have experienced frustration or failure in previous school environments. They may feel discouraged, anxious, or even disconnected from learning altogether. At Cambridge, these students are met with understanding, encouragement, and the tools they need to succeed. As they begin to experience academic success and feel supported by their teachers and peers, their confidence grows and so does their love of learning.

“As a school, we also emphasize the development of executive functioning and social-emotional skills, which are essential for lifelong success” adds Peters. Students learn strategies for organization, time management, goal-setting, and self-regulation; skills that are integrated into the daily routine and modeled by teachers. These foundational tools prepare students for success in high school and college.

Our College Counseling and Postsecondary program is unique to the Cambridge Upper School. The process is fully integrated into the Upper School Curriculum. In each of the student’s four years they participate in courses designed to help them identify their passions, strengths and interests. “Our goal is to uncover what brings the student joy and to help them find opportunities to explore that emotion and identify a pathway to postsecondary success,” explains Peters.

We are proud of the extensive list of Colleges and Universities to which Cambridge graduates have been accepted. That list can be accessed on our website. Parents of Cambridge alumni often say that their child’s postsecondary option would not have been possible without their Cambridge education.

Over the past 25 years, Cambridge School has made a meaningful difference in the lives of countless students and families. As the school continues to grow and innovate, its mission remains the same: that every child deserves the opportunity for an excellent education.

“We are incredibly proud of the progress our students make,” Peters says. “But more than that, we’re proud to be part of their journey. Watching them rediscover a love of learning and develop into confident, capable individuals is the most rewarding part of what we do.”

In a world where education often feels standardized and impersonal, Cambridge School stands as a source of hope and possibility for students who learn differently. Through a blend of compassion, expertise, and individualized support, the school continues to unlock the potential in every student, one success story at a time. Cambridge School is truly the door to a brighter future.

Meghan Peters is the Assistant Head of School & Dean of Academics at Cambridge School.
She earned her Bachelor of Science degree from Boston College and her Master of Arts in Teaching & Special Education from North Carolina State University. Meghan is a Wilson® Dyslexia Practitioner with over 12 years of experience teaching students with language based learning differences.

When families think about after-school activities, they often picture sports, music lessons, or academic clubs. But what if there was a program that combined skill-building, friendships, and fun—all in one place? That’s exactly what Girl Scouts Heart of New Jersey (GSHNJ) offers.

Serving more than 13,000 girls from kindergarten through 12th grade across Essex, Hudson, Hunterdon, Somerset, Union, southern Warren, and parts of Middlesex counties, GSHNJ is where youth of diverse backgrounds come together to discover their strengths, try new things, and build the confidence and skills to power their futures. Supported by nearly 9,000 adult volunteers, our movement empowers every young person to find their voice and use it to make the world a better place.

Who We Are and What We Do
At its heart, Girl Scouts is more than an extracurricular activity—it’s a movement that builds courage, confidence, and character. Through hands-on experiences, community involvement, and skill-based learning, Girl Scouts helps young people grow into resilient, adaptable, and compassionate leaders.

Jennifer Barr/GSHNJ

At GSHNJ, we offer programs that meet girls where they are today and prepare them for where they want to go tomorrow. Every Girl Scout has the chance to explore their interests in a safe and supportive environment.

The Girl Scout Advantage
So what sets Girl Scouts apart from other youth programs?

 • Leadership Development: Members learn to set goals, work with others, and lead with confidence.
 • STEM Opportunities: From coding and robotics to astronomy and engineering, Girl Scouts explore innovation.
 • Outdoor Adventures: Camps and outdoor experiences help challenge themselves and build resilience.
 • Entrepreneurship Skills: Cookie and Fall Product Programs teaches goal setting, money management, and business ethics.
 • Community Service: Girl Scouts are changemakers, tackling local issues that matter to them and making a lasting impact.

Research shows that Girl Scouts are more likely than their peers to excel in academics, and pursue ambitious goals. Families who choose Girl Scouts invest in a program proven to deliver long-term benefits.

Jennifer Barr/GSHNJ

What We Offer
GSHNJ offers a variety of ways for girls and families to participate:

 • Troop Experience: The traditional troop setting allows girls to connect regularly with peers, build friendships, and explore new activities together.
 • Camps: With Camp Hoover (overnight) and The OVAL (day camp), Girl Scouts can unplug, explore nature, and try everything from hiking and swimming to archery and outdoor cooking.
 • STEM and Mobile Learning: Our Girl Scouts on the GO! Mobile Classroom Powered by Kean University brings hands-on STEM programming directly to communities, offering robotics, artificial intelligence, and sustainability projects.
 • The Girl Scout Leadership Center (GSLC) in Newark: A vibrant hub for community engagement and youth development, the GSLC offers programs, workshops, and events that connect Girl Scouts to leadership, STEM, and life-skill opportunities in the heart of Newark. The center expands our reach and provides a safe, welcoming space for girls and families across the region. It also serves as a visible anchor for the movement in one of New Jersey’s most dynamic cities, connecting Girl Scouts to schools, community partners, and families who may not otherwise have access to traditional troop settings.
 • Signature Events: From the annual Day of the Girl celebration to regional STEM expos and leadership conferences, our events give girls big-stage opportunities to shine.
 • Highest Awards: Girl Scouts can earn Bronze, Silver, and Gold Awards—the most prestigious honors in Girl Scouting—by leading local community service projects that create meaningful, sustainable change.

Every Girl Scout journey is customizable, flexible, and designed for busy families.

Jennifer Barr/GSHNJ

Who We Serve
Girl Scouts Heart of New Jersey proudly serves girls from kindergarten through 12th grade across seven counties. We are intentional about making programs accessible, offering scholarships, creating school-based troops, and building partnerships so every girl has the chance to join, regardless of financial circumstances or location.

Our commitment extends to families, too. Volunteers are essential to the Girl Scout experience, and we provide training, resources, and community connections to support them. Many families find that volunteering strengthens family bonds and builds lasting networks of friendship.

Why Girl Scouts, Why Now?
In today’s fast-paced, often digital-first world, girls need real opportunities to connect face-to-face, discover their passions, and build the skills they’ll carry for life. Girl Scouts is uniquely positioned to provide that.

The Girl Scout Leadership Experience is research-backed and girl-tested. It equips members with the confidence to speak up, the resilience to overcome challenges, and the skills to lead with empathy and purpose. Whether your child dreams of becoming a scientist, artist, entrepreneur, or community leader, Girl Scouts provides the foundation to help her get there.

And it’s not just about the future. Along the way, girls enjoy unforgettable experiences—camping under the stars, launching rockets, planning service projects, traveling near and far, and, yes, selling cookies that open doors to new adventures.

Join the Movement
Choosing Girl Scouts means joining a community where every girl belongs and every voice matters. At Girl Scouts Heart of New Jersey, we believe in the limitless potential of girls, and we are committed to helping each one embrace her possibilities.

If you’re ready to give your child the Girl Scout advantage, visit gshnj.org/joinus to learn more and find a troop near you.

Together, we can build girls of courage, confidence, and character—who make the world a better place.

Joseph Allen/GSHNJ

Gina Dandrow serves as the Director of Membership at Girl Scouts Heart of New Jersey, where she has dedicated nearly a decade to helping young people and volunteers thrive in the movement. Throughout her career with GSHNJ, she has held several key roles—including High Awards Program Specialist, Leadership Development Specialist, and Volunteer Experience Manager—bringing a deep understanding of Girl Scout programming and member engagement to her current work supporting families and volunteers across the council.

What is a pediatric orthopedic doctor?

A pediatric orthopedic doctor treats children’s bones, muscles and joints. They’re specially trained to care for growing bodies, which require different treatment than adults. They also treat broken bones, sports injuries, and deformities such as clubfoot.

Why is pediatric orthopedic care different from adult care?

Children’s bodies are still growing, so they need care tailored to their development. Pediatric orthopedists understand how growth affects bones, muscles and joints and can provide treatments that support healthy development.

What are growing pains, and when should I be concerned?

Growing pains occur when bones grow faster than muscles, causing leg aches, especially at night. They’re usually harmless and improve with rest or stretching. See a doctor if the pain worsens, happens frequently, or disrupts sleep. Avoid using medication to mask symptoms.

What are overuse injuries, and how are they treated?

Overuse injuries happen when a child repeats the same activity, like sports or an instrument. These can cause pain, swelling, or limited joint movement. Pediatric orthopedists treat them by identifying the cause and recommending rest, activity changes, or special exercises to help them heal.

How do pediatric orthopedic doctors treat spine issues like scoliosis?

Pediatric orthopedists treat scoliosis, a sideways curve of the spine. If your child’s back looks uneven or hunched, visit a scoliosis center for evaluation. These centers use low-dose X-rays; experts can recommend bracing or physical therapy.

Metropolitan Window Fashions

Specialty: Home Renovation

Tell us about Metropolitan Window Fashions and what makes it unique.

We’re a third-generation, family-run business offering free in-home decorating for custom draperies, motorized shades, Hunter Douglas blinds and shutters. Most window-covering companies are either big-box retailers that subcontract work or tiny mom-and-pop shops. We’re a rare hybrid—still family-owned, with 20 skilled pros on payroll—making us NJ’s largest independent custom window-covering retailer. Our mission is simple: Do the right thing—for customers, staff, and the community.

What other services do you offer beyond window coverings?

Custom reupholstery is a big part of our business. We strip your furniture to the frame, rebuild it with new foam, and upholster it in the fabric of your choice. It’s a smart way to refresh quality or heirloom pieces. We also carry high-end wallpapers from Europe—far beyond what you’ll find at paint stores. If you love design, you’ll love exploring our curated wallpaper collections.

What does it mean to be leading a 90-year-old business?

It’s an honor. I had strong ties with my grandfather and worked with my dad for nine years. There’s a lot of pride—and pressure—in keeping it going, but I’m inspired daily by the team that recruited me to leave NYC and join the family business.

What trends are families asking for today?

Motorized shades now account for 40 percent of our sales. They can be operated by remote, app, or voice—and even scheduled to open in your kids’ rooms each morning. Dual shades are great for letting in light while preserving privacy. Insulated shades and draperies can cut energy bills by 15 percent, and many qualify for a $1,200 federal tax credit. These features add convenience and sustainability to your home.

How do you give back?

We quietly support local organizations and offer $250 gift certificates for community fundraisers. Giving back is part of who we are and always has been. What’s next for you? We’re always growing. With five locations now, we plan to expand. We’ve got 10 years until 100, and we’re just getting started.

Families are preparing for summers filled with beach and pool visits, making it critical for families to brush up on water safety tips before jumping into any water-related activities. Unfortunately, drowning is the number one cause of injury-related death for children ages one to four, and the summer months (May to August) account for two-thirds of annual childhood drowning incidents.

We asked the swim and water safety experts at Goldfish Swim School to share key water safety tips with us in honor of National Water Safety Awareness Month:

Water Safety Tips:

Enroll in Swim Lessons + Practice Basic Moves Before Returning to the Pool:
One of the best ways to protect your children against drowning is to improve their comfort level in the water and strengthen swimming capabilities through swim lessons, which have been proven to reduce the risk of childhood drowning by 88 percent. Lessons help increase muscle memory by practicing basic techniques for kids to use during a water emergency, such as the crab walk, properly getting in and out of the pool, going underwater, rolling on their back, treading water, learning different strokes, etc.

Swap Out Floaties & Puddle Jumpers for U.S. Coast Guard-Approved Life Jackets:
Don’t rely on floaties and puddle jumpers to keep your kids afloat. They give children a false sense of security in the water; they can easily come loose or deflate, and they teach children to float in a vertical position, which is the opposite of how our bodies actually float. Search for the Coast Guard approval on flotation devices, because it means the lifejacket has met all the regulations that the Coast Guard has set in place as they relate to performance, construction and materials. Pay attention to proper fit, too. The fit matters because if your head or ears can slip down beneath the life jacket, the device won’t work as designed to keep your head above water and allow for proper breathing.

Seek out Bright Colored Swimwear & Properly Fitted Goggles: When shopping for swimwear, avoid colors that could blend in with the water and choose swimsuits with bright colors instead. They will stand out in the water and make it easier to spot a swimmer in need of help. When shopping for goggles, there’s a couple factors to look for: making sure they fit around the eye comfortably (the top of the goggle cup should fit under the eyebrow and comfortably seal on the bottom under the eye socket), that the nose piece is not too tight or too wide, straps easily adjust.

Ensure Your Children Know the Rules: Sometimes, when our little ones are in play mode, rules fall by the wayside. Review rules together as a family before letting your kids loose to enjoy the water. Pay special attention to pool hours, and always schedule your swims when lifeguards are present, if possible.

Pro tip: Make sure your kids know what to do in a water emergency. Their first instinct may be to go toward the person having trouble in the water. Instead, they should throw or reach a life preserver of sorts – and don’t go! That way, they aren’t putting themselves in jeopardy as well and are truly able to help.

Designate a Water Guardian: Make sure to keep your eyes on your kids at all times – even if lifeguards are present. Kids are as curious as they come and are always willing to push the limits without knowing the true hazards. Designate an adult “water guardian” and be sure to change guardians every 30 minutes so he/she is alert and refreshed. A water guardian’s sole responsibility is to keep an eye on the swimmers. Vigilance is key–no chatting, no checking your phone, no distractions.

As you review these 5 water safety reminders with your kids, it’s a great time to ask yourself if your kids are water-ready?! If not, swim by one of the 11 New Jersey-based Goldfish Swim School locations to sign up for a free trial lesson or enroll in a one-week summer swim clinic to start your safer swim journey today!

With 11 locations throughout New Jersey, Goldfish Swim School is New Jersey’s premier learn to swim program providing swim instruction to children ages 4 months to 12 years old. Visit the website for more information and get your first swim lesson free goldfishswimschool.com.

Capitol Debate

The Essential Skill Often Neglected

Parents eagerly enroll five-year-olds in soccer leagues and schedule piano lessons before children can tie their shoes. We invest early in athletics and arts—understanding that young minds and bodies develop best with early training.

Yet the single most important skill for lifelong success—public speaking and debate—is routinely neglected until high school. By then, the prime developmental window has already begun to close, putting your child at a significant disadvantage compared to peers who started earlier.

The Unspoken Crisis in Child Development

In today’s hypercompetitive world, children who cannot articulate their thoughts clearly, defend their ideas persuasively, or think critically under pressure fall behind by middle school—often permanently.

Children without early communication training typically:

 • Fade into the background during class discussions
 • Hesitate to share innovative ideas, even when they have them
 • Freeze with anxiety when called upon to present
 • Watch as leadership opportunities go to more verbally confident classmates

Meanwhile, their debate-trained peers are mastering the exact skills that colleges and employers consistently rank as most valuable: critical thinking, persuasive communication, and confident self-expression, giving them an unbeatable head start.

The Science of Starting Early: Why Age 10 Is Critical

Developmental psychology research reveals that ages 9-12 represent a crucial window for cognitive development that cannot be replicated later. During this period, children are:

 • Transitioning from concrete to abstract thinking
 • Developing neural pathways for sophisticated reasoning
 • Forming intellectual habits that often last a lifetime
 • Open to developing public speaking comfort—before teenage self-consciousness creates lasting barriers

This isn’t opinion—it’s science. Studies show that children who engage in structured argumentation during this critical period demonstrate measurable advantages in reading comprehension, critical thinking, and analytical skills that persist throughout their academic careers and into adulthood.

Capitol Debate

Immediate Advantages That Transform Academic Performance

Children trained early in public speaking and debate don’t just perform better in language arts—they excel across all subjects because they develop:

 • Superior reading comprehension and analytical thinking
 • The ability to organize and express complex ideas clearly
 • Confidence to ask questions and participate actively in learning
 • Critical listening skills that enhance understanding in every class

Real-World Success Stories: The Power of Early Debate Training

At Capitol Debate, we’ve witnessed thousands of transformations that prove early starters consistently outperform those who begin later:

Hailey J. began our program at age 10 at the University of San Diego as a shy, hesitant speaker. Today, she’s graduating from Harvard, having developed an innovative app and device helping cancer patients communicate with caregivers.

Michael K. started at age 11 at our Loyola Baltimore campus, initially struggling to organize his thoughts coherently. By high school, he had won the nation’s most prestigious debate championship. Michael is now graduating from Dartmouth Medical School,

These aren’t isolated success stories—they represent the typical trajectory of students who begin debate training during the critical developmental window.

The Capitol Debate Advantage: Transforming Young Minds When It Matters Most

Our specialized age-appropriate curriculum for children 10 and up doesn’t just teach debate techniques—it builds the fundamental cognitive architecture for lifelong success:

 • Building Unshakable Confidence: Our supportive environment allows children to find their voice before self-consciousness creates barriers that can last decades.
 • Developing Superior Critical Thinking: Students learn to analyze information, evaluate evidence, and construct logical arguments precisely when their brains are most receptive to these skills.
 • Mastering Persuasive Communication: Through structured practice and expert feedback, children develop communication abilities that set them apart in every future academic and professional setting.
 • Cultivating Natural Leadership: By learning to listen actively and respond thoughtfully, students develop authentic leadership qualities valued by top universities and employers.
Capitol Debate

An Investment That Pays Dividends for Life

While sports and music certainly have value, no other activity develops the precise combination of critical thinking, confidence, and communication skills that debate provides. Unlike many childhood activities with limited long-term impact, these are exactly the skills that determine success in higher education, career advancement, and leadership roles.

The most successful professionals in virtually every field—from law and medicine to business and technology—share one common trait: the ability to communicate effectively and think critically under pressure. These skills aren’t innate talents—they’re developed abilities that must be cultivated at the right time.

Don’t Wait Until It’s Too Late

By the time your child reaches high school, many communication patterns are already deeply ingrained and increasingly difficult to change. High school debate programs—while valuable—can’t fully compensate for missing the prime developmental window.

The parents who watch proudly as their children excel in high school and beyond are most often those who recognized early that communication abilities aren’t optional extras but essential foundations for all other learning.

Your child deserves every possible advantage. In a world where the ability to articulate ideas clearly, think critically, and speak confidently increasingly separates leaders from followers, early debate training isn’t a luxury—it’s a necessity.

The question isn’t whether your child needs these skills. The question is whether you’ll provide them during the optimal window for development or leave them struggling to catch up later.

Capitol Debate offers comprehensive summer programs at prestigious university campuses nationwide, with a specialized curriculum designed for students ages 11-17. Our expert instructors create an engaging, supportive environment where students don’t just learn debate techniques—they discover their voice and develop skills for lifelong success.

Ron BrattRon Bratt is the owner of Capitol Debate. He has given his life to developing debate skills in children because he has seen how it enhances their intellectual growth. He has been involved in creating high school debate and college debate programs to help students learn practical skills that will benefit and enrich their lives.

Ron Bratt established the Catholic University Debate program in 1998, leading the team to multiple national titles during his 6-year tenure. Additionally, he played a pivotal role in forming the Urban Debate League in Washington, D.C., and collaborated with the International Debate Educational Association to bring students from Europe and seven other countries for leadership and debate training in the U.S.

In 2006, Ron Bratt established Capitol Debate with a vision to empower young individuals to find their voice and drive change in both their lives and the broader world. Since its inception, he has successfully expanded the program to over 15 cities, including notable locations like Princeton, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Boston, San Diego, the Bay Area, and Seattle.

Beyond Capitol Debate, Ron has made significant contributions as a commentator on national political debates. He was notably featured in Washingtonian Magazine in the run-up to the 2012 presidential debates between President Barack Obama and challenger Mitt Romney.
